Happy Sunday, everyone! For those here in the U.S., I hope you’re having a good and safe holiday weekend. Around these parts, it’s been wicked hot and humid outside, and I would much rather stay nice and cool indoors, thank you very much. 😉
I’ve been spending a lot of time watching episodes of a show called Leverage. I had forgotten had good it is, and I would highly recommend it to others. For those who aren’t familiar with it, the basic premise is that an ex-insurance adjuster becomes the mastermind of a group of criminals, who fight for the people who have been wronged by the large companies and corporations. The team comprises of a former mercenary (the “hitter”), a tech-savvy genius (the “hacker”), a lifelong con artist (the “grifter”), and a legendary ‘acquirer’ of priceless trinkets and artifacts (the “thief”). In cybersecurity terms, the group becomes a world-class team of social engineers, enabling them to con, steal, fight, or hack their way out of any situation.
The coming week for work is a bit of a busy one — I’ll be working from home for most of it, as our offices are being renovated and new furniture is being delivered and installed. I’m quite looking forward to it!
The Exposed Shore
I was chatting earlier with someone about how I have a hard time (I’ve noticed I say ‘struggle’ a lot, LOL) when it comes to thinking of something to write about on my blog. I am finding it easier to not feel obligated to post on a consistent basis — my last post was 2 weeks ago, so I’m growing in that aspect.
I was mentioning that how others had given advice in the past saying that it is okay to reuse ideas, or cover an idea using my own voice. On the logical side of my brain, this is a perfectly sound and rational idea — amplifying a message I feel is important, and helping it reach a wider audience.
But, the emotional and creative side of me? It makes me feel icky, like I’m cheating. That idea didn’t come from me, but someone else. Why would I parrot someone else’s message, when they can go to the source themselves? Any other creative types suffer from this as well?
Here’s a plot twist for you to further muddy the waters: I have to do this sometimes at work, especially when it comes to writing articles and other things. One can’t possibly be expected to come up with completely new and original content. Businesses and organizations do share similarities with other businesses and organizations, after all. Policies, procedures — even articles — are tailored to fit the organization. There is no one-size-fits-all.
Why are brains complicated?
